About American Public Media commerce activities
Our retail business began in 1980 when four products were shown on the back of a poster that was sent to fans of A Prairie Home Companion. Audience demand proved strong, and the resulting catalog grew over time into a $225 million business. (Revenue from the catalog's eventual sale established an endowment fund for Minnesota Public Radio and American Public Media.)
American Public Media has retained several commerce functions to generate income, support the distribution of products associated with public radio programming, and to provide a resource for public radio audiences. Sales are carried out through several channels.
The Pretty Good Goods web site sells a wide variety of merchandise from several public radio shows, including A Prairie Home Companion, Car Talk, The Splendid Table and All Things Considered. The merchandise is managed and distributed through a fulfillment house with product selection and merchandising handled by APM staff.
Public Radio Market is a collection of online outlets that operate as affiliates of Amazon.com and other vendors. Purchases made through storefronts for programs like The Splendid Table and The Writer's Almanac generate commissions up to ten percent. Classical music affiliate sales are handled through Arkiv Music. Downloads of digital recordings by Garrison Keillor and A Prairie Home Companion are provided by Highbridge Company.
Email newsletters, a Facebook fan page, and a blog provide updates on new products and special offers.
