Thanksgiving Day, 2009

November 2005

Classical music is always the centerpiece of Giving Thanks. For its seventh season, we'll bring new guests to the table:

Ted Kooser is Poet Laureate of the United States. On Thanksgiving 1998, recovering from cancer, he began his day by taking a morning walk and writing one short poem, which became part of his most personal and uplifting collection, Winter Morning Walks. Kooser shares Thanksgiving memories and reads from his 2005 Pulitzer Prize-winning book Delights and Shadows.

Rita Dove was Poet Laureate of the United States from 1993 to 1995 and won the 1987 Pulitzer Prize. She recounts coming home from school for Thanksgiving and telling her parents she wanted to be a poet. She'll also read poems of gratitude from her collection On the Bus with Rosa Parks.
