About the Program

November 2011

With music and stories for Thanksgiving, it's Giving Thanks: a Celebration of Fall, Food, and Gratitude.

New for 2011, two best-selling authors join us at the table:

  • Nora Ephron, best-selling writer and movie director. She wrote and directed Julie & Julia, and received Oscar nominations for When Harry Met Sally, Silkwood, and Sleepless in Seattle. Ephron shares Thanksgiving stories, and a very personal gratitude list from her latest book.
  • Roy Blount Jr is a writer, and a regular on NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. Garrison Keillor says "Roy Blount Jr is the best. He can be literate, uncouth and soulful all in one sentence." Blount remembers boyhood Thanksgiving in the South, and shares his humorous essay The Way Folks Were Meant to Eat.

Classical music is the heart and soul of Giving Thanks, and this year's selections include the world premiere performance of Table Grace, Matthew Brown's choral setting of a grace by Garrison Keillor, sung by VocalEssence. Plus classics from Bach, Copland, and more.

Between the music, no clichés about pilgrims and pumpkin pies. Instead, it's a contemporary celebration of the spirit of Gratitude. And we continue a Giving Thanks tradition shared by 300 APM stations: a spellbinding story from actor Charles Laughton, giving thanks for Art that connects us all to the creative spirit.

Many, Many Thanks
by John Birge

A steamed-up houseful of noisy cousins. Fancy plates and silver. A lot of food, not a lot of elbow room. As a child, I measured Thanksgiving through these ordinary things. As an adult, I discovered the deeper meaning of Thanksgiving in the unlikeliest of places—a small studio, where I was putting together a radio show.
