History

Founded in 1967, American Public Media began as a single classical music radio station at St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn., then operating as Minnesota Educational Radio. As the network expanded in the Twin Cities, St. John's helped establish an independent, nonprofit entity, Minnesota Public Radio, which eventually grew to a 38-station network in Minnesota and surrounding states with three radio services: classical music, news and The Current, broadcasting eclectic music.

In 1982, Minnesota Public Radio was a lead partner in forming American Public Radio, which became Public Radio International. Founder, president and CEO William H. Kling is also a founding board member of National Public Radio.

American Public Media was launched in 2004 as a national production and distribution organization and has fast become the nation's second largest public radio producer after NPR. From our roots operating a regional public radio network, to our award-winning news initiatives and cultural programs, to our public radio leadership in interactive content and online syndication, American Public Media is pioneering new ways of engaging our audiences, delivering our content and achieving our public service mission in the digital age.
